Auditing User Access in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011

Auditing User Access in CRM 2011 is now an easy task!

Since I started implementing Microsoft Dynamics CRM, one out of every three customer asked for this feature and the workaround that I provided was to create a User Adoption Dashboard that would show the number of records (Accounts, Contacts, Activities, etc.) that users created on the last 30 days.

With the release of Update Rollup 5 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011, Microsoft has given us what we need, the ability to Audit User Access.

Here are the steps to accomplish this:

  • Navigate to Settings -> Administration -> System Settings -> Audit Tab and Enable the “Audit User Access” checkbox:

  • After this is enabled, you can keep track of user access by navigation to Settings -> Auditing -> Audit Summary View and then Enable Filtering on the Entity column by “User”:

This is the first time this functionality is included in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 so it will be improved over time, as of now it can only accurately log access every 4 hours, which might be a good thing since you don’t want to flood your database space with User Access related Audit entries.

For now, I am very excited to see this capability available for all of us!

Thanks Microsoft Dynamics CRM Team!
